What is the FTTH fibre optic network from Chiasso4net?
With the state-of-the-art FTTH fibre optic network from Chiasso4net every home and business premise in Chiasso, Vacallo, Morbio Inferiore and Balerna has its dedicated fibre optic connection and can benefit from ultra-high Internet speeds of >1Gibt/s, symmetrically for both downloads and uploads and with exceedingly high reliability. The FTTH fibre optic network of Chiasso4net will be indispensable for everyone living and working in Chiasso, Vacallo, Morbio Inferiore and Balerna in the future. As an open FTTH fibre optic network, it provides fair access to all telecommunications providers, in order that they, in turn, may provide their modern multimedia services and super-fast Internet to all homes and businesses in Chiasso, Vacallo, Morbio Inferiore and Balerna. Therefore Chiasso4net promotes free and fair competition.
Why do we need the FTTH fibre optic network?
The demand of the general public for high bandwidths is constantly growing. Copper cables and coax cables are already currently reaching their technical limits and are not expandable as well. In contrast, fibre optics guarantee unlimited data capacity at the speed of light. With the FTTH fibre optic network from Chiasso4net, Chiasso, Vacallo, Morbio Inferiore and Balerna are ideally equipped in the verity of data for the communication of the future.
What benefits does the FTTH fibre optic network offer?
Everyone benefits from ultrafast data transfer rates > 1 Gbit/s and the new multimedia services. All telecommunications providers are guaranteed access to the open FTTH fibre optic network. Customers have free choice and can change their telecommunications provider quickly and easily. Competition provides significantly more attractive prices, a broad variety, and much better quality service.
How sustainable is the FTTH fibre optic network?
Optical fibres are extremely efficient. A single optical fibre per household suffices for the needs of the most demanding customers. Namely even if the speeds and data quantities increase in the coming years by four to five times.
What does open network mean?
The FTTH fibre optic network from Chiasso4net is available to telecommunications providers without discrimination. Chiasso4net deals exclusively with the construction and network operation of the fibre optic infrastructure. It does not provide any multimedia service.
How does the multi-fibre model according to BAKOM work?
OFCOM (Federal Office of Communication) published a guideline for the roll-out of FTTH network in Switzerland, to ensure the state-of-the-art quality of the networks. The Chiasso4net network was rolleded-out following the guidelines set out by OFCOM, in particular 4 dedicated fibre per household ensuring capacity for all future use and open access to the infrastructure. All telecommunications services providers can choose to offer their services over these optic fibres which are owned, provisioned and operated by Chiasso4net. Each residential or business unit is tapped into with four optical fibres and supplied and connected directly from the central office to the optical telecommunications outlet (OTO). For the customer, this implies a significant added value, in which namely each has a direct connection in his flat/business and therefore must not take any loss in the ordered and paid data quantity, as is unfortunately currently negatively the normal case with DSL (copper) and cable TV (coax) offers. This modern FTTH fibre optic network from Chiasso4net corresponds with the model and the recommendations of the BAKOM (Federal Office of Communication), which apply for all of Switzerland.
BAKOM FTTH guidelines
Where can I get information about the offers?
All telecommunications providers are listed at www.chiasso4net.ch. A link will guide you to the offer for each provider. You can order your desired multimedia services directly with the respective telecommunications provider.
Am I required to pay a fee as an owner or renter if I should happen to not need the connection?
No – there is no fee without active use of the fibre optic connection.
Where are uniform standards defined?
Uniform standards are defined for the installation in the building as well as for the interfaces between the FTTH fibre optic network and the telecommunications providers on the one hand and the end customers on the other. We develop exclusively according to the recommendations of the BAKOM.
Does the state regulate competition?
Companies (cable and copper network providers) that develop their own telecommunications infrastructure in Chiasso, Vacallo, Morbio Inferiore and Balerna and also offer their own multimedia services across it, do not support the non-discriminatory and open approach. The non-discriminatory model and the resignation from an in-house multimedia offer on the part of Chiasso4net promote unlimited competition and therefore regulation is no longer necessary for this.
Are multiple networks required to create adequate competition?
There are already multiple networks (copper, cable TV, mobile broadband) at the infrastructure level but unfortunately, these are all discriminatory, that is to say that they are not open to all potential telecommunications providers on a fair basis. For this reason, a single modern FTTH fibre optic network, as Chiasso4net operates, makes absolute sense. Especially free access for all telecommunications providers to the FTTH fibre optic network from Chiasso4net provides innovation, ecological sustainability, and competition. The modern FTTH fibre optic network also complies with free competition and particularly future data streams in the price/benefit category.

The FTTH fibre optic network is complete and in operation.
Who built the fibre optic network?
Chiasso4net outsourced the development (physical implementation) to local construction and installation companies. In addition, Chiasso4net used the already existing pipeline infrastructure of AGE, which positively affects an economic and ecological construction of the fibre optic network.
How was the fibre optic network built?
Chiasso4net connected all properties (up to the flats/businesses) to the modern FTTH fibre optic network – if possible via the existing pipeline infrastructure. The fibre optic cable was laid in the pipeline infrastructure and then completed it with a domestic connection box via a cleanly sealed house feed, which is normally in the cellar. An electrical installer feeds the optical fibres with an ultrathin cable through the existing infrastructure (e.g. empty conduit, riser shaft) into the individual flats or commercial spaces. This installer installs an optical telecommunications outlet (OTO) in all end properties, which is then connected to the connection device of the end customer. Chiasso4net supported all applications for work and material up to and with the optical telecommunications outlet (OTO). Individual in-flat tapping, i.e. all additional installations necessary in the flats or commercial spaces from the optical telecommunications outlet (OTO), such as data cable or wireless connections (wireless LAN) are not at the expense of Chiasso4net.
I would like to build a new construction. What must I do to get connected to the FTTH fibre optic network from Chiasso4net?

Will replacement structures be tapped into free of charge as well?

Why are there not more FTTH fibre optic networks?
The network rolled out by Chiasso4net has almost unlimited capacity and is open to every telecommunications provider, there is therefore no need for additional infrastructure. Multiple developments do not provide any added value, but yield very high economic costs and unnecessary additional expenditure (permits, meetings, decisions in counsels, etc.) for the local authorities. In addition, multiple developments lead to addition construction emissions for the residents and to ecological defects.

Does the FTTH fibre optic network in my flat consume electricity?

You only provide the infrastructure on your property (empty conduit outside and inside, including riser shaft); this infrastructure is usually already present.
Where can I get information about the installation?
